There are five lower denomination values with the design loosely based on the Kilchoman Cross, and four higher values whose design is based on the Kildalton Cross with a generic coastal scene in the background.

We wanted to create a design reminiscent of some of the classic stamps of the past, using a single colour (with the exception of the £1 value) and incorporating ornate features. The higher values imitate the intricate design styles of some of the early GB commemoratives such as the 1924 Wembley issue and the 1929 UPU Congress. This was important to us, because in addition to making a statement about local identity and cultural heritage, we wanted the definitives to be a tribute to some historical issues—particularly Ireland’s iconic 1922 Celtic Cross definitives. However, there is also a tribute to Great Britain’s first postage stamps, with a penny black and a two penny blue. The three other colours used (red, green and lilac) were commonly used in early GB definitives.
Part of the reason for taking inspiration from the past is an admiration for the classic designs and a respect for philatelic history, but we also felt it was practical to avoid modern logos and arms, etc. which are not owned by ourselves.
